Digital technology (Q1A)

Planning:

Introduction -
Digital technologies have had a great influence towards my media production's over the past two years. Since completing my foundation portfolio to my advanced I have learnt many skills regarding the use of digital technologies and the many benefits they entail. For my foundation portfolio I produced an short movie opening in the 'thriller' genre, as for my my advanced I produced a music video in the 'EDM' genre. I will discuss which digital technology I entailed for the PRE-PRODUCTION stages, PRODUCTION stages and the POST-PRODUCTION stages.

Definition of digital technologies - Digital technologies refer to any technology that relies on computers to function. This is a vast and complex concept, as digital technologies can refer to special effects, digital online streaming including catch-up services, social media, digital distribution and digital editing techniques.

What software was used?

  • Keynote
  • Imovie
  • Paint/ photoshop
  • Social networking: Twitter, Facebook
  • Research via streaming sites such as Youtube and Netflix + google search engine
  • Internet - Surveymonkey.com

What equipment/ hardware was used?

At AS:

  • Nikon camera
  • Sony camera
  • Tripod
  • IMac
Benefits:
-Nikon camera was idea for establishing shots, Sony was good for close ups considering at gave an 'grainy' effect which suited the 'mellow' atmosphere of the thriller theme
-Tripod allowed cameras to stay steady whilst shooting
-Basic use of IMac for editing, considering we we were only just introduced, easy to upload footage although it took a while to figure out how to

Drawbacks:
- Bulky camera's meant we initially struggled to hold steady shots and framing etc
- Heavy equipment was difficult to carry to set, so much so, on some days pieces of equipment had to be left behind
- Due to having little knowledge on how to operate an IMac it took time to develop basic skills

At A2:
  • Iphone 6/7
  • Tripod
  • IMac
Benefits:
- Filming with an iphone was extremely portable, you could easily film in small spaces and allowed easy to access to travel whilst filming, as well could check quality of footage straight after filming it
- Tripod was the heaviest equipment to carry however was only required on the days we had to do steady/or establishing shots, due to having light weight cameras, the tripod wasn't that big of a struggle to hold.
- Skills regarding using an IMac were much further developed, video's could be uploaded within minutes

Which technology was used for each stage?
(Mixture of AS + A2)

Pre-production
  • Prelim - Digital cameras to film, Imovie to edit
  • Storyboard animation
  • Research via youtube, netflix, social media, spotify etc
  • Audience research - twitter, surveymonkey.com
Production
  • Digital camera to film
  • Storyboard animation to analyse & re-create
  • Music (spotify) to listen to which part of the video we were shooting
Post-production
  • Imovie to edit
  • Keynote for titles
  • Youtube to post audience feedback/ present opening sequence/ music video
  • Surveymonkey.com, Twitter to receive audience feedback
HOW important digital technology was?

WHY was digital technology important?

  • Digital technologies are absolutely essential to the television/ movie industry for a number of ways, as digital technologies are essential for all modern media texts. This is referred to as media convergence, where different industries are combined to create new opportunities for producers. Audiences now increasingly using devices such as phones and laptops to access TV texts, and therefore the convergence of digital technologies allow producers to target ever larger and more diverse audiences.

WHAT EFFECT did digital technology have on your final work?

WHAT would you NOT have been able to do without digital technology?

HOW did digital technology benefit you?

Conclusion -
Digital technology has enabled me to become a producer that can not only make a higher quality product media product, but edit and distribute it to a wide audience as well.

Use of real media conventions (1A)

Conventions are the "common features" of a particular type of media or particular genre. In what ways were media conventions adherd to? Was there fast paced editing? did the performer act to the camera? were particula shots repeated? Were the representations appropriate for the genre? which aspects were challenged? Intro - For my foundation portfolio I created a 2 minute opening for a thriller film called 'Classified' in which a mysterious young women is running away from an so-called villain who is eventually captured. Whereas for my advanced portfolio I created a music video of the EDM genre in which was focused primarily on performance. Throughout the construction of both productions my understanding of the conventions of real media texts informed my decision making. Camera: First of all for my foundation portfolio my opening was shot firstly by an establishing angle as a long take. Which we gained from inspiration of the 2003 thriller 'The lif...

Representation (Q1B)

Identify characters, events or issues within the production to discuss? and what representational concepts are highlights i.e women? Theorist 'David Guantlett' believed that "identity is complicated - everybody thinks they've got one" . To counteract this quote, for my AS opening sequence production we chose to have an female protagonist in order to subvert the typical 'male' stereotype. Thus, we discuss the elements of feminism in our production. Subverting Laura Mulvey's 'male gaze' - our main protagonist is fully dressed, and not sexualised in any way. However, does counter in the stereotype that the female victim is weak and passive to the villain, although the villain would had been later revealed to be also an female, this subverting Vladmir propp's character stereotype's in media texts.  For example the hero/ villain are typically played by a male, whilst the princess is arguably played by an female. We took inspiration f...

Audience (1B)

Intro - Why is it important / essential for a media product like a film to appeal to an audience? Target audience? The target audience for my foundation portfolio were 16-24 year old females, thus through a market research questionnaire, I found that most females would like to see a woman represented in an empowering/ heroic role. Furthermore we decided to choose a female protagonist for a short 'thriller' genre movie opening, due to being most appealable to audiences. How will the production appeal to the target audience & what techniques will be used? What uses and gratifications will the target audience get from the production? How does the production use audience theory? i.e. reception theory, uses and gratification, active/ passive, hypodermic needle How did you use the following things to attract /engage an audience Camera Editing Sound Mise-en-scene What feedback did you receive after your production, did they react the way you thou...
